🇦🇺 Slang from Australia

How people talk in Australia.

no worries

A super relaxed way of saying "no problem" or "you're welcome". You say it when someone thanks you or apologises, to show it's all good.
"Sorry I'm running late!" "No worries, I just got here myself."

brekkie

Breakfast, plain and simple. Aussies love shortening words, and the first meal of the day is no exception.
Let's grab brekkie at that café down the road before we head off.
SlangShare

bottle-o

The bottle shop, which is what Aussies call a liquor store. It's where you go to buy beer, wine or spirits.
Can you stop at the bottle-o on the way and grab a slab for the barbie?

chockers

Packed to the brim or totally crowded, with no room left. It's a short way of saying "chock-a-block".
Don't bother going to the beach today, it's absolutely chockers.
SlangShare

heaps

Means "a lot" or "loads", like "heaps of people". Aussies also use it to mean "really" or "very", as in "heaps good" or "thanks heaps".
There were heaps of people at the footy, and the pies were heaps good too.

sickie

A day off work that you call in sick for, and quite often you're not really sick at all. People usually say they're going to "chuck a sickie".
The surf's pumping today, I reckon I'll chuck a sickie and head to the beach.

servo

A petrol station, the place you fill up the car. Most servos also sell snacks, drinks and pies, so people pop in for food too.
We're nearly out of fuel, let's pull into the next servo and grab a pie while we're at it.

arvo

It's just the Aussie way of saying "afternoon". You'll hear it all the time, especially in "this arvo", which means later today after lunch.
I'll swing by yours this arvo once I knock off work.

bogan

Someone seen as rough around the edges and unsophisticated, kind of like a British chav or an American redneck. It can be a put-down, but plenty of people use it fondly or even call themselves one.
Mullet, flanno and a ute with a massive sound system, he's a proper bogan.

spit the dummy

To throw a tantrum or lose your cool, like a baby spitting out its dummy (pacifier). Usually said about adults acting childish.
The coach totally spat the dummy when the ref called it offside.
